Captain Craig Bailey

Other experience:

Captain Bailey has been going to sea since joining the Navy in 1958.  He was one of the Navy's first  Nuclear Guided Missile Technicians working on Regulus Cruise Missiles at Guided Missile Unit 10 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  He served on several Submarines including SSN Halibut, SS Tuny, SS Barbero, SS Corsair, and the SS Corporal which operated in the Arctic.  He was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1963.  For more information about what we were doing then read the recent book "Blind Man's Bluff" by Sontag and Drew, Harper,1999.

He has owned and sailed his own yachts and a former 155' Dutch Salvage Tug.  He has performed many commercial and yacht deliveries, world wide.  Recently, he delivered the yacht "Hula Girl"  for Mr. Gene Hackman from San Juan, PR to Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Also, a 95' former Danish Pilot Boat, that was converted into a yacht, from Athens, Greece to Costa Rica.  A large yacht from St. Martin in the Caribbean to Oregon; another large yacht from Panama to England.  All deliveries were performed on time, within budget, and with no insurance claims.  He has also supervised construction for several yachts including a 77' Huckins Sport Fisherman.

He has also been engaged in TV and film marine production.   He has worked on such films as "For Your Eyes Only", "Jaws", "Splash", "Caddy Shack" "Island" and "Thunderboat Row".  He worked in marine production for the TV Series "Miami Vice", and on several TV commercials.

He has extensive computer and electronic skills.  He has had an onboard computer since the late 1970's when the operating system was CPM and the box was a KayPro II (II for 2mb ram).   He is experienced in DOS, MS Windows to XP and NT.  He is familiar with most working software including MS Office, Adobe, Corel, and many others.  He has set up several computer networks, and has experience with all forms of computer communications.  He has published several web sites both commercially and privately, including this site.

He also has experience in installing and operating satellite systems including KVH, SeaTel, Marine Sat and more. He held the position of operations manager for Sport Tote LLC, Miami, Fl. which setup off track betting systems on Carnival cruise ships, but because the company was just ahead of the technology, they went out of business. However, we did have some success on the cruise ship "Holiday" out of Los Angeles and managed a tote system for 6 months.

Captain Bailey is familiar with all forms of Marine Navigation including celestial, sailings and electronics.  He began his career using a sextant and dead reckoning and advancing to Loran A,  Loran C,  Omega and Decca; and finally Satellite Navigation.  He holds a USCG Global Marine Distress System Operators (GMDSS) License and an Advanced Radar Plotting (ARPA) License.

He has extensive knowledge of relevant Code of Federal Regulations, USCG Marine Safety Manual, ISM Code, NAVICS, MCA, and International Conventions.

Captain Bailey often sails with his son, Fred, who holds a USCG 200 ton Captain's License and Tankerman Documents. He is a college graduate, and all around good guy.  We have sailed yachts and tugs together for many years.

My Plath Sextant is pretty much retired now, since GPS, but I used it for many years.
